WIPO quoted Pham Viet Hoai, founder and Chairman of Kymviet, as saying that people buy its products not because they want to contribute to charity but because the products are of the highest quality.

The homepage of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) recently posted an article to praise Kymviet Space, a Vietnamese handicraft production and trading establishments founded by people with disabilities to create jobs for people with disabilities in the country.




According to the article, Kymviet is currently registered only in Vietnam, as the company has been focusing on strengthening its brand and reputation nationally. However, it is now ready to enter foreign markets and, in the next five years, is determined to expand to Europe and protect its brand internationally.

The article said the company also intends to create more job opportunities for disabled people in Vietnam and to open a professional vocational training centre for them along with promoting the Vietnamese culture to the world.

A WIPO brand expert is working with the company to develop an international brand and other intangible assets to support Kymviet’s business expansion goals.

Hoai said Vietnam has over 2.5 million deaf people, and Kymviet focuses on this community, with most of the staff being deaf. Kymviet’s mission is to provide job opportunities to these individuals and empower them to fulfill their potential.

Đây là câu hỏi khá thú vị vì nhiều người có thể đã không phân biệt được. Thật ra, các thuật ngữ "handicraft" và "handmade" thường được sử dụng khá tương đồng để chỉ những sản phẩm được làm bằng tay, không qua máy móc. Tuy nhiên, có một vài điểm khác biệt nhỏ mà chúng ta có thể phân biệt:

Handicraft:

Tiện lợi: Thuật ngữ này nhấn mạnh tính tiện lợi, dễ làm. Những sản phẩm handicraft thường có quy trình sản xuất đơn giản hơn, sử dụng các vật liệu dễ tìm và dễ chế tác.

Sáng tạo : Mặc dù đơn giản hơn chút, nhưng handicraft vẫn khuyến khích sự sáng tạo cá nhân. Bạn có thể tùy biến và tạo ra những sản phẩm độc đáo theo sở thích và gu thẩm mỹ của xã hội đương đại.

Ứng dụng đa dạng: Sản phẩm handicraft có thể phục vụ nhiều mục đích khác nhau, từ đồ trang trí, đồ thời trang, đồ dùng cá nhân đến quà tặng.




Handmade:

Tinh xảo: Thuật ngữ này nhấn mạnh tính tinh xảo, thủ công cao. Sản phẩm handmade thường đòi hỏi kỹ thuật cao hơn, sử dụng các vật liệu chất lượng và quy trình sản xuất phức tạp hơn.

Truyền thống: Handmade thường gắn liền với các kỹ thuật truyền thống, được lưu truyền qua nhiều thế hệ.

Giá trị nghệ thuật: Sản phẩm handmade thường mang giá trị nghệ thuật cao hơn, được coi là tác phẩm thủ công mỹ nghệ.

Tóm lại:

Handicraft là một khái niệm rộng hơn, bao gồm cả những sản phẩm từ phức tạp tới đơn giản và dễ làm.

Handmade là một khái niệm hẹp hơn, tập trung vào những sản phẩm tinh xảo, có giá trị nghệ thuật cao.

Ví dụ:

Handicraft: Một chiếc túi thời trang nữ được làm từ vải và cói


Handmade: Một chiếc bình gốm Bát Tràng được làm hoàn toàn thủ công, trang trí họa tiết tinh xảo.



Sự khác biệt giữa hai thuật ngữ Handmade và Handicraft không phải là tuyệt đối, mà thường phụ thuộc vào ngữ cảnh và cách sử dụng.

When Disability Rhymes with Creativity, Dynamism, and Excellence in Viet Nam

In a small tree-lined street in Hanoi, a colorful storefront advertises Kymviet Space, aiming to change the perception of people with disabilities. At the end of a lively, decorated corridor, a four-story building hosts a team of 30 disabled staff who produce beautifully stitched and assembled home decoration items.


When Pham Viêt Hoai was seven years old, an accident left him disabled and wheelchair-bound. As he grew up, he realized how difficult it was for disabled people to find work, and undaunted, he started several businesses, ranging from the printing industry to computers and industrial equipment.

Armed with his business experience, "I decided to open a business that would create jobs for people with disabilities and looked for the best way to employ them." In Vietnam, Pham said, "people with disabilities do not have many career choices." He finally opted for cloth designing and crafting, which would be accessible for disabled people and promote the cultural identity of Vietnam. "Luckily, I was right," he said.




In December 2013, Pham launched Kymviet with two other disabled individuals: Le Viet Cuong and Nguyen Duc Minh, who passed away in 2019. Le Viet Cuong left Kymviet in 2018 to establish another structure for people with disabilities: the Vun Art Cooperative. Pham is Kymviet’s remaining founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Starting with three sewing machines and three staff in two rented rooms, Kymviet soon took off. After several moves, with the help and cooperation of the Hanoi Architectural University, Pham designed the current headquarters to meet the needs of disabled people, featuring ramps and large windows welcoming natural light, as well as hosting warehouse space, workshops, and a café open to all.

Kymviet is completely self-sufficient; the financial resources to pay salaries, factory rents, and fixed costs are all covered by the sales of goods and services. The company is not dependent on any funding, and its strong self-sufficiency allowed it to weather the Covid-19 crisis and "stand firm after three years."

Nguyễn Thị Thùy Trang is a happy and enthusiastic staff member. At 48, she has been with Kymviet for nine years. "Before joining Kymviet, I had to go to many places to find a job but was always refused by employers because I am a disabled person." "I started by learning many things here, such as cutting and sewing, and it was not easy at the beginning," she explained, proudly adding that now she is an expert.

When she joined Kymviet, she was a young mother of a son and daughter; the company’s steady income allowed her to raise her children without financial worries. She witnessed the company's humble beginnings, its subsequent success, and she wishes that everyone could appreciate the quality of the products. "We might be deaf, but we create beautiful products at Kymviet," she said. "I am very happy working at Kymviet; it brings me joy and happiness."




Tradition and Innovation

Pham explained that all the Kymviet models aim to transmit and reflect the traditional values of Vietnamese culture. Kymviet works with two designers, Nguyen Viet Dung and Kieu Tuan, to produce between three and five new models monthly. These models are prototyped to test different fabrics and then submitted for customer review before being launched into production. The production volumes depend on the complexity of the products, but on average, the company produces between 3,000 and 5,000 items per month.

Sáng 23-9, Công nương Kiko đã ghé thăm xưởng sản xuất Kymviet (quận Nam Từ Liêm, Hà Nội). Đây không chỉ là nơi kinh doanh đồ uống mà còn là địa chỉ tạo công ăn việc làm cho người khuyết tật. Tại đây, công nương đã gặp gỡ, trò chuyện với các lao động là người khuyết tật.
Ông Phạm Việt Hoài - chủ tịch hội đồng quản trị Công ty Kymviet - bày tỏ họ đã rất phấn khởi khi được đón công nương Nhật Bản tới thăm. Theo ông, điều đó cũng là sự ghi nhận với mô hình ủng hộ người khuyết tật vươn lên trong cuộc sống mà doanh nghiệp này đang thực hiện.

Ông Phạm Việt Hoài đã giới thiệu và đưa Công nương đi thăm quan cơ sở sản xuất.

Ban đầu, Kymviet chỉ có vài lao động, đều là người khuyết tật vận động, câm điếc. Tài sản vỏn vẹn 2 chiếc máy khâu, 1 máy vắt sổ, 1 cái bàn là, hoạt động trong khoảng sân rộng chừng 5m2 tại nhà thờ họ của một thành viên công ty. Đến nay, công ty đã có gần 30 nhân viên, trong đó 25 công nhân là người câm điếc. 


Công nương đã hỏi chuyện người lao động tại đây về nguyên liệu, cách làm ra sản phẩm. Theo giới thiệu trên trang web, các sản phẩm thủ công của doanh nghiệp này chủ yếu làm từ vải, bao gồm các sản phẩm trang trí, quà tặng lưu niệm, sản phẩm ứng dụng. Hiện có 30 người lao động khuyết tật đang làm việc tại doanh nghiệp này

Công nương đã có một buổi học ngôn ngữ ký hiệu Việt Nam online từ trước chuyến thăm. Sáng nay, công nương Nhật Bản đã dùng ngôn ngữ ký hiệu để gọi món giải khát trà đào cam sả. Theo trang History of Royal Women, Công nương Kiko cũng từng học ngôn ngữ ký hiệu Nhật Bản và có nhiều hoạt động hỗ trợ người khiếm thính tại Nhật 

Sau đó, Công nương đã thưởng thức đồ uống trong không gian Kymviet cà phê, ông Hoài đã tặng Công nương 1 sản phẩm thủ công là đồ chơi nhồi bông hình rồng.
